Poking around on the internet this evening, I stumbled across a picture of a fairly well-known actress at a fancy event…and then when I read the blurb under the picture, I realized that it was an event put on by the conservation nonprofit that I used to work for.
Ahhh, nothing like the reminders that I am back in the so totally uncool museum/history field. Conservation is cool–all the celebrities want to be seen supporting it, and you can be young and hip and still be in to it. History? Museums? Hahahahahahahahahaha. Hrmph.
Before working for the Conservation Organization, I figured that all nonprofits were pretty much the same. But now that I can compare two very different fields within “nonprofits”, I know how wrong that was. History and museum nonprofits have to scramble around and beg hundreds of people to give them a few bucks, while conservation organizations just have to remind people that they exist and have millions of dollars thrown at them.
I am in no way trying to downplay the importance of what conservation organizations do. I totally support their efforts, but it’s just so frustrating that other equally important fields don’t have the cache.
I wish there was a way to make museums and history and preservation cool. Gah.
